What is R-value?
R-value is the measurement of a material’s thermal resistance, or the amount of resistance a material has to the flow of heat. When it comes to the logs used in the building your home, the higher the R-value of the log, the greater its insulating capabilities. This means less temperature fluctuations, lower energy costs and a far more comfortable home environment.
- Should I be concerned about a shortage in Northern White Cedar?
The rumored shortage of the Northern White Cedar is actually a misconception. Back in the early 1920’s through the 1940’s, nearly every type of structure was built with logs and the Northern White Cedar was the primary source. However, in the late 40’s and 50’s, treated lumber was introduced and the market shifted dramatically, leaving the Northern White Cedar ample time to replenish itself. Even now, the plentiful growth of this Cedar far outweighs its usage.
Is a log home environmentally friendly? (Katahdin Goes Green)
Whether you choose to build with northern white cedar, red cypress, your Carolina Log Center home will be environmentally friendly! The Carolina Log Center makes the environment a priority and has chosen suppliers who exemplify a respect for nature. Katahdin Cedar Log Homes has an intricate manufacturing process that guarantees every part of every tree is used. They have even created a separate product line for items created with tree segments that do not go into the building of your home. Bark, for example, is turned into mulch and excess lumber contributes to shadow boxes and other beautiful pieces.
- What is the benefit of pre-drilled logs?
For Northern White Cedar, Carolina Log Center offers Katahdin pre-drilled logs, as these save time during construction, which keeps the cost of building down, but also contributes to a higher quality home. Each log is pre-drilled to accept lag bolts, which assemble faster, are more weather resistant, and are far more tightly held in place than traditional pole barn spikes or log screws.
- How should I determine what type of log home is right for me?
The Carolina Log Center has not only done the research on different types of log homes but provides you with a variety of options, from log species to floor plan designs.
